How to get here

In the way to Lacu Roşu from the town of Gheorgheni, soon after we leave the centre of Gheorgheni we will see on the right a road sign that indicates the location of the Geography Faculty of the Babes-Bolyai University. As we follow this sign, we will get to the dendrology park called “Csíky-kert’ (Csíky Garden).

Description of the area

The “Csíky-kert” is located north-east from the town of Gheorgheni, 870 – 970 m above the sea level. It offers a good view of the whole town.

The garden was founded by a lawyer called Dr. Dénes Csíky, who was born in a well-off Armenian family in the town of Gheorgheni on 26 June 1843. He went to primary school in his hometown then studied at the grammar school of Csíksomlyó and the law school of Cluj. He loved the nature and was a obsessed with botany.

He bought a large piece of land in the north-east of his hometown and started planting trees in 1884. In 1909 the garden was „ready”. The trees were planted in such a way that in spring and autumn the deciduous trees of the garden showed the monogram of their creator (Cs D).

Nowadays this is not visible any more as the fall of the old trees and the new plants changed the structure of the garden. The garden was housing 185 trees, autochthonous and allochthonous ones as well. Unfortunately the complete list of these 185 trees and bushes is not know today.

In his arboretum Dénes Csíky managed to acclimatize several allochthonous fruit trees, thus demonstrating to the locals that fruit production is possible even under this climate. Dénes Csíky donated the 20 ha garden to the town, but long years passed until the garden actually became the property of the town. In the meantime it was not looked after, its conditions and value deteriorated a lot.

For a while there was a sanatorium for children suffering of lung disease in the buildings of the garden, then it was turned into a preventorium up to 1980.

In May 1980 the Csíky Garden the was declared a protected area. In the 1980s there was an attempt to map the flora of the garden, but not all the tree and bush species were identified.

In 2008 the garden was leased out for the Babes-Bolyai University for a period of 20 years, thus the restoration of the arboretum have been started, the lanes of the garden have been upgraded and the fountain has been renovated as well.

The aim of the lease was to restore the arboretum and to make it suitable for education and research activities, presentation and preservation of rare and endangered species. Among the plans there is an education lane that would present various flora typical of different heights, making use of the varied relief of the garden.
